My first batch of eggs hatched last night and the parents ate all the young very quickly I have heard this is common with first time parents. do they normally stop or should I look into rearing artificially?

You cannot rear the fry artificially successfully. The mucous membrane of their parents is extremely important as their diet base as they mature. Leave the discus to do their parenting skills. They will improve eventually.

Discus will eat their eggs or young if they feel stress from other fish in the tank, are in a hurry to spawn again, or first time spawners who just haven't figured it all out yet. If the pair are in a tank with other fish, they need to be moved to their own tank if any other spawns are to be successful.

I disagree 100% , we have been artificially rearing batches of Discus fry for sometime now with great success. We have also discovered that the fry will consume live BBS in their first week after becoming free swimming.

I will say that it is best if the fry are left with the parents to raise as the mucus that the fry consume is like mothers milk and contains many valuable components that young fry thrive on.

you can raise them artificially. That's how they get them parasite free which is becoming very popular in mainland Europe these days. Bigger fish that grow faster but look like a plate full of jelly babies...
Most discus will eat their first couple of spwnings. If they keep doing it put a wire mash over the spawning cone
