I have a ray tank going right now and I will be adding some discus I was thinking of having the background black so the colors on the discus will pop more any suggestions would be appreciated

With discus you generally want a light colored background. The reason is that discus naturally lighten or darken to better blend into their surroundings. If you have a black background, the fish will naturally darken to try to blend in, resulting in a dark looking fish rather than one that "pops".

alot of people paint there tanks. on Simplydiscus forum youll see alot of threads of how to do that. its fairly simple and u have unlimited choices in colors. one of my options i was thinkin or to have one of my friends that does window tint to tint it a light blue.

As suggest if you don't want bars or you want less peppering lighter = better. Of course it also depends on what type of discus you are getting. IE albinos or blue diamonds and such work great with black backgrounds, if you aren't trying to breed.

But in general most people go with white to light blue.

Foam board works well also. The advantage is it can be cut to fit easily, and can be removed and changed quickly if taped to the tank. It also acts as a bit of insulation as well. Foam board can be purchased at art supply stores, office supply stores, Walmart, and you can even use the foam board that is designed to go under house siding from Lowes or Home Depot.

Thank you for all the suggestions I think I'm gonna paint the back a light blue, I just wasn't sure about how much a darker color would effect them.

white or blue would be nice for discus. black bottom and side tanks tend to darken them

Light bottom much better than darker bottom

I know I learned that darker background & my barebottom tank has darken & peppered my discus. so yes lighter the better. I just added plants in glasses/cups so I can still keep bare bottom. once I added the plants all my discuss got lighter & less peppering!
