Hey,

just out of interest i wondered why some discus show black bars along their sides. is it stress or just camoflage?

cheers

haha. cheers

Usually when the discus are young they are really obvious, but as the discus grows, the stress bars will be seen less. Some types of discus do not have stress bars though.

Also many of the bars are just from the orginal Discus that were found and breed. IE Heckel bars and such. It is quite interesting to hear where the colors and traits have been breed from. If you can get to a talk from Ken Davis on this, I don't know how often he does that talk, but he did it for the AAAA a few months ago.

also, these new discus. it is natural for them to not eat for a few days as they are settling in. They havnt eaten for 3 days now. one has dim stress bars (hardly noticable). they are in a tank with 2 dwarf gouramis and 10 neon tetras. I am feeding them the food that the LFS store fed them. pefect water conditions, and i left the in dark for the first day to help stress conditions. i hear that they become more used to the tank then they eat. i didnt want them to become starved and have a crisis on my hands.

cheers

Leave the lights off a little more. Is the tank in an open area? If it is, you might want to put something on the sides for a couple of days. Or move the tank. They don't like a lot of traffic. They get real stressed with a lot of movement.

its in my bedroom, and im at college for most of the day. I will leave the lights off and cover the sides. i will still feed them and keep an eye on them to see if they feed, if it becomes too long i will probs get in touch with my LFS. cheers
