I have heard that discus like tight spaces when breeding, and as a result can be bred in extremely small tanks if given enough height to suffice an adult pair. As a result, while not fully believing it, I have stated this notion, subsequently angering less knowledgeable and unrightfully strict aquarists with this fact (for minor entertainment). However, is there in fact truth to the idea of breeding adult discus in a 29?

I have not had discus for a good number of years, nor kept up with new trends on that. I did keep wilds for years in the 90's-2000's. A 29 gal was considered the standard breeding customary tank for a single pair that had proven to like each other (i.e, mated or likely to mate pair). I also used them, as well as 30g. No BS about that. Of course it can be done in larger tanks, but then, those are needed for grow-outs or groups of adult fish...
