Hey everyone, Im new to discus and i purchesed 3 3" or so discus and im having trouble getting them to eat. I added flake food, they try it once and spit it out, i tried bloodworms, they try it once and spit it out, and i just got home from petsmart, i bought beef hear and it looks like 1 of the discus is eating it but goes after one piece and doesnt go back for another for a little while meaning he doesnt continuesly go eat another piece. the other 2 really do not seem interested. they seem to be scared still when i come up to the tank and sit there while i feed them which i expect because they only been in the tank for 2 days and today i disturbed they by removing some geo's. Any advise to get them to eat would be great thanks in advance!

The discus are active and swim all around intill i come to the tank then the hide. Im guessing that they are timid still and that is also effecting them not to eat yet. I just would like some opinions and adivce :)

first off chances are you started with a bad stock of discus considering theyre from petsmart. i would recomend reputable dealer. an amazing one is kenny

http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showt...h-2012-Forrest-shipment-(Price-list-included) he just got his stock in =]

secondly i would suggest you get more than 3 discus they prefer to be in groups of atleast 5-6 (the more the better)

on to the not eating problem, whats the tank temp? what size? what are the other tank mates? how many times do you feed a day? how long have you had them? notice any white stringy poop? water paremeter?

generally fish should eat by the 2nd day but some can take up to a week to start eating. rule to follow is a healthy fish is a fish that eats.

Lol I didnt get these from pet smart and I dont believe they sell discus there. i got the beef heart there only since it is right down the road from me.. I got these from one of the best Discus dealers around Stendker Discus straight out of Germany. These are all high quality I promise you that. But i think the problem is that there are only 3 like you said and also that i got them 2 days ago and today i disturbed them by scooping out all the geos i had in the tank so that didnt help. so i am going to get a few more tomorrow and see if that does the trick. One of them is eating the beef heart now but the other two are still timid towards me hopefully that will change soon

o my apologies i got it confuse. as to them being stendkers unless you order from the breeder or an imported directly i doeubt the lfs water has been kind to them. i would suggest keeping a close eye out for parasites

Well Know it seems weird but what I do when I get new fish and I'm having the same problem you are, I'll try and feed them at night with the lights off.. Works for me

What's the water temp at? Go lights out for a couple for a couple of days and try to get some live blk worms. When I got my group of Stendkers all they took was my BH/seafood mix and Blk worms... it took some time to get them on flakes and pellets.

The temp is at 86*. Like i said they are active but seem to be just scared of me still.. Im going to get a few more discus today to add to the tank maybe they will feel safer in a group of 5 cause there are only 3 in there right now. Thanks everyone

Sometimes it takes them a little bit to eat a different diet. Mine use to spit out the beefheart when I first started them on it, but new they attack it like crazy..........
