Hi,

I'm new to this site, I'm hoping someone might be able to shed some light on my discus's behavior. I've got a community tank, parameters below, my discus is floating or hovering at a weird angle. She is literally hovering, using her fins, at a 60 degree angle in the middle of the tank. Her face is pointed upwards toward the top of the tank, and she just hovers there for minutes at a time. She's eating normally, and not showing any other signs of stress. Is there any reason for her to do this, or is there something wrong?

Tank Parameters:
30 gal. tank
Temperature: 82 F
Ammonia, Nitrites and Nitrates: 0 (well planted tank)
PH 6.8
Tank Mates: 1 small discus (the one in question, we got her from a breeder, she measured 3" at 1 year and hasn't grown since), 1 adolescent discus (2.5" tall), 3 tetras, 3 small plecos, 1 whisker shrimp

We've had the tank set up for about a year, the discus in question for about 8 months. She's never shown signs of stress before, this is new behavior for about 3 days now.

Sorry, but i cant give much insight about your question, but a 30 gallon for 1 or even two discus is much too small. Probably when the 2.5 inch one gets a bit bigger, they will end up fighting until one dies. They are schooling fish and like to be in groups of 6 - 8 and shouldn't be in ANYTHING less then a 55 MINIMUM. And the fact that your discus is only 3 inches. Not normal. that means that he/she is stunted. Also, what kind of plecos are in there? If they are commons that tank is also much too small. Unless this is a grow out tank, you should take what i said seriously. Sorry for all the badgering. Look at the plus side. Tank upgrade :D
