Well I'm finally getting my Discus after months of trying to decide if i wanted to devote so much time to water changes. I'm using a 125 gallon established tank. I'm planning to take out the gravel and replace with sand and add 1 very large piece of driftwood and a few fake plants. Here's my question: How can i make sure the tank is clean prior to adding my Discus? I mean no parasites. I don't want to put new Discus in a tank that may or may not have parasites that will get in my Discus. Should i treat the new fish with Metro as soon as I get them? I'm also planning to do 2 50% water changes a week and see if this is suffiencent. I'm getting 5 P. Eruptions.

I don't know if this is an an option for you, but I really only trust UV systems to stuff like this.

If you buy them all from the same place and all at once, then it doesn't make any sense to treat them before you add the to your tank unless you already have other fish. That's my O2..........

i use water straight from the tap... to make your water changes eaiser i use a 3/4 in clear hose i drain my take to the shower then i take off the shower head slide the hose over the pipe and fill it to temp i have a 240 takes 15min never had a prob discus are not that fragil

I don't know, I think he could even go like 30% once a week, 125 gallons is a lot to do 50% weekly...

Be careful with tap and discus. It's not a function of fish fragility but an issue of tap water quality. Mine sucks so I use Reconed RO. I do 2-3 45 gallon WC per week which take 10-15 minutes. However I have my siphon hooked to house plumbing. I have a heated RO/DI reservoir that files every 2 days.

Yes discus are relatively fragile but this can vary by breeder and location and so will your water. I know people who keep discus in tap with only decholr and haven't had the slightest issue. I know others who can't keep them even with a DI system and had to go with full RO/DI, plus recon.

what size are the fish? juvies, (under 4") need to be fed much more than large fish so more water changes are required. I have a 120 Gal. with 5" - 6" wilds and I do 2 50% wc per week. tap water and prime. nothing else added to the water.
