I have been keeping cichlids for about 2 years and I'm thinking about putting discus in my 29g. I read the sticky on this forum (I am in the research stage of the plan) and there were a few things that worried me. My biggest fear is that it says they should be kept in groups of at least 4 and each discus needs 10 gallons. Does this mean my 29g tank is too small? As I could either get 3 of them or crowd them. Could this work? Thanks for your help!

with daily water changes and enough food, discus will out grow that tank in a few months. I say no. these are not tetras so do not treat them as such. just mho.

I wasn't saying they were tetras and I definately didn't plan on treating them as such. That's why I'm doing additional research and asking people that know better than I do. Clearly, it isn't going to work. Thank you all for your help!

I don't see any problem keeping just one discus in a 29 gal tank you could keep 2 in there if they are a pair. To get a pair you need to buy 6 and let them pair off or pay a lot for a proven pair.

You could grow a small gorup of 5 or 6 in that tank but you would have to get a 55 gal or bigger would be better. Once they grow up.

I am in no way an expert on these fish. All I know is I have one baby discus in a 36 gal with 3 festivums and my little guy is doing great he is not shy he swims with with festivums and eats like a pig. It's not the best but if you are just getting into these pricey fish I think to get one and see what you think is not a bad thing. Because soon enough you will get hooked and get another tank.

My one little guys has me hooked and I'm going to set up a discus tank in the fall or as soon as I can find my uaru a home.

sorry, did'nt mean to sound rude. could you keep discus in a 29 gal ? sure you can, and you can keep 1 or 2. I'm sure it's been done. this is just my opinion and not meant to flame you in any way. these are beautiful fish that deserve and demand the best of care. my fish are between 5 1/2 - 6 1/2" and they are not fully grown yet. can't imagine them in a 29 gal. as I stated, they will out grow that tank in a short time.

I will used that tank only as a growout and you need to do frecuent water changes, don't try to put 2 or 3 because they will pick on eah other thats why its good to have a big group of at least 4 to 5, but a 29 gallon won't house more then 2 fully grown Discus. Now young discus they need to be feed at least 3 times a day thats why you need to do water changes every day if you want them to grow healthy and not stunt your fish, also very sensetive to bad water, i mean parameters but a lot people forget sudden temperature changed can cause problems.

maybe a growout tank for 4 baby discus then in move on to a 100+ since i prefer bigger tanks lol
