I got a pair their a little over a year. they started spawning for the first time about a month ago. they spawned 4 times already each time having bigger spawns. the last spawn she laid a ton of eggs and all fertile but one egg. they take great care of the eggs untill the day their going to hatch. then they start slowly picking at them untill their gone,i dont get it. will this stop as they become more mature? should i sceen the eggs with wire untill they hatch? or just keep letting the do it untill thegy get it wright. any suggestions would be great. thanks

I think primarily the urge to spawn again causes this behavior. Often, a water change while a pair is on eggs will trigger the pair to eat the eggs or fry so that more can be laid. Some have covered eggs until they hatch. But it certainly doesn't mean that the fry won't be eaten later. Often, only one of the pair eats the eggs, usually the male. In my experience, some fish outgrow this behavior, and others never do.
