settin up a new 75 gallon discus tank, I have a shoplight that I am using to provide lighting, for bulbs I have 2 general use lights on the tank right now I am thinking of switching to a GE AquaRays bulb and a actinic blue bulb that are on for about 2 hrs in the mornin and about 6 in the evening with a smaller 24" bulb on during the day. How does this sound? any suggestions about other bulbs or combinations of bulbs to use

When your picking lighting remember that Discus prefer deep water and lower light, they are less skidish!!:WHOA: :WHOA: :WHOA:

are you planning on having a full planted tank set up if so i would do between 5 and 6500k and stick with the shop light if not hagens aqua glo 18k would be a great light bulbs to put on your tank brightness would be perfect for discuss

I have seen this advise also, but no one told my discus, so they dont seem to care. I run 4-65 watt 6700k on my 85 gallon for 9 hours a day

would the actinic blue do anything as far as bringing out color, most of the discus i am going to stock are going to have alot of blue and i want the colors to be extremely brilliant, also I am going to only run the lights in the evening with something smaller like a 24-30 watt bulb that will run during the day, no sense in running them when no one is around to enjoy the colors. The tank is not planted it has all plastic decorations. Other live stock includes 24 neon tetras, 12 ottos, african butterfly, 6 corys, and possibly 2 zebra plecos if i can find them for reasonable.

maybe these pics will help. I have 4 X 24" strip lights on my tank, 2- 24's on each side. One is white light the other acitinic blue. I have red leopards that have a light blue base.

These pictures were taken with out lights on.

The Acitinic lights brings out their blue colors nicely but I also think it washes out their metallic sheen just a tad too.

Pet stores are pretty good at letting you exchanging lights ask them first if it's ok to exchange them for the right combo. I'm sure they wouldn't mind.
