Discus mating question?

Yes. This is a good reason to keep groups of different strains separate. If you mix groups of different strains together, they will often pair up with a fish of a different strain. However, careful crossbreeding over generations is how the hobby gets new and different strains.

interesting to know. How do the crossbreeds generally end up looking? Ugly or interesting or what?

Often, most of them grow up to look like one of the parents instead of a cross of both.

Have a look at Mendel's laws of inheritence. That will give you an idea. It really become more interesting when you cross the F1 generation and the way the F2s look

just to add. i dnt know if this is true but i think it is.. i have read that u can also get paird discus of the same sex....

Parthenogenesis? You don't need a pair for this. It occurs in cichlids but is extremely rare. Never heard about it occuring in discus though
