Discus & other cichlids with ICH/ fin rot

Ok first off I would like to say when you read This please keep your hatred comments toa minimun about the fish I have in my tank. They have been together for almost 6 months and this is the first issue I have had. ( no fighting or anything else.)


ok with that said 😜 I have a 125 gallon tank which includes, 1 oscar, 2 discus, 2 angels, 2 red jewels, 1 JD, 1, blood parrot, 1 s bichir.
Now I have recently run into a problem which I first diagnosed at fin rot(oscar,JD, parrot) were the only ones with it. I have treated the take for a total of 48 hours as the instructions stated. It looks like it's getting better on all now that I have done about an 80% water change after treatment! except for the jd of which I'm still uncertain. No it seems like my fish have ICH! (1 discus, oscar kinda, angels kinda also.) no other fish has signs of ICH. My check board discus is the worse. All others have maybe 1 or 2 white spots.

Now I have read that stress from moving could cause some of this. Since I just recently moved and have been here 1 month I guess it could be that but I'm not sure. My water in this new house NEVER drops below 80 degrees F. I use salt and Prime or stress coat when I do WCs.

thoughts on if I should treat with ICH meds? Also my oscar has had in the past ICH and HITH. Which I treated successfully.
Do oscars cause disease?
Should I replace him?


one other thing. All of these fish have been together since they were small. They are still small but growing 😃 I also recently removed the 2 plants I had cause they weren't doing to well.

That I will have to get back to you on. I have asked my LFS multiple times if I need to buy stuff to test that. He suggested no, because I live right next to them and we draw the same water. So he has me use A salt ans prime or stress coat when I do water changes.

but I do plan on buy that stuff today.
 
Every tanks parameters (ammonia, nitrite, nitrate)will be different even in the same house.do to different stock, feeding, w/c.size.that is not good advice telling you not to get a test kit.if you have a spare tank I would quarantine the sick fish, get the proper meds,get an A.P.I.freshwater master test kit. remove filter carbon. Medicate accordingly, closely watch all the other fish for signs of illness as well.moving doesn't really cause Ich as far as I know , but can be stressful and make fish more susceptible to illnesses.

How often do you perform your water changes? You mentioned this new tank was up and running about a month, how did you cycle. Seeded bb or other? Did the fish change tanks, or did you move their tank to a new location with most of their water and media? Stress can cause ich, but fin rot is normally due to water quality which can also stress the fish. You should definitely pick up a test kit at least one that tests nitrates, nitrites, and ammonia. Hope this helps as a starting point.
 
Ok off subject from that then. I have gravel...should I keep it or move to smaller sand like? Any recommendations for food to feed them? I use blood worms and try to feed pellets but they don't always take them.
 
Quick Cure will knock that ich out QUICK, and you can get at Walmart for 2 bucks.I have also had success treating external infections such as fin rot using Quick Cure. Flakes,pellets,brine shrimp, krill,blood worms(Hikari),you name it they will most likely eat it!
 
My tank is the same tank they have had. All the filters and everything were transferred here durin get the move. I also left some water in it so I didn't kill the environment. I slacked the first couples weeks here but I always change the water weekly and I do at least 50-75% every time. And I'm back on the weekly schedule.
 
You need to remove the discus before they get killed by the other cichlids. Discus will not mix well with oscars and jd's. I understand it's been fine for 6 months, but it will end badly for the discus if not removed.

I will will not be removing them unless forced. They are fine them and until proven otherwise I'm sure they will remain that way. My oscar is none aggressive the only fish I can say he "doesn't like" around him all the time is the parrot and that's because they battled a little when they were the same size( in my smaller tank which I don't have anymore).But my smallest discus is constantly hangout out with my oscar and my parrot. The JD is alway hiding he doesn't like much when people get around the tank.

i have done much reading on this and it CAN be done. Most people don't try it because of the cost of discus. I just need to stay on top of the water changes and quality and I know and them will make it through ��
