ok so the tank is the 5ft 120g in my thread, i am wanting to do a complete revamp of the tank keeping only the 4 geophagus surinamensis (still very small with the largest being around 3in) and delhezi. i was thinking about going way out and doing a paludarium, making it somewhat of an amazon biotope (except for the del of course haha) and adding maybe 6 discus. if i went with the paludarium type set up i would keep at least 16in of water giving me at least 75g of water volume for the fish (i know this is very low for the bio-mass but i would keep a close eye on it) or do you think that this stock would have way to much waste to keep up with in 75g of water? i have these fish and several other cichlids i am growing out (with the largest being my 6-7in arg and dont have any problems so i would think that discus would create less waste than these fat guys (had a turtle hatchling in with them so the water level was lower but i have since rehomed him in anticipation of switching this tank to discus) i could also up the water level a bit but i want to put in a water fall feature so would want enough space to make a nice size one (forgive the very crude Paint drawing lol i am definitely NOT an artist haha) anyways my main question was what are your guys thoughts on doing a discus tank this way and do any of you have larger paludarium set ups like this with discus? should i do less than 6?

Bump, nobody has any input? has anyone done a large paludarium set up like this with a different stock and have any design suggestions? most of the paludarium set ups im seeing on here a in small tanks...

I love the idea but for discus I would only do it in a tank at least 30" tall. 16" may be enough for six discus but I think 20" would be much better. I have 8 adult wilds in my 120 gal. and they put out a lot of waste. I had a paludarium a few years ago but it was a 46 gal. with small tetras. less than 6 discus in never a good idea. the problem with a shallow tank is that if you do a 50% water change your going to have 8" of water. that may put some stress on the discus.

yeah thats what i was thinking to, i wasnt sure if the water height would be enough but yeah i couldnt do 20in in this tank because then that would only leave 4in above that, hmmm may have to wait on the discus then until i find a cool column tank or something to do it in, maybe ill just do the paludarium and keep my argentea and get a bunch of serpaes and just have him as the focal point... now that i have been looking into ways of doing this paludarium though i know for sure that its what i want to do with this tank, once its established i might even throw in a couple red eyed tree frogs for the fun of it :)
