IN YOUR HEAD
i have been doing alot of reasearch and learning alot about them, as i will be setting up a tank in the neer future...but the thing that i keep getting mixed answers on is the hardness req. i have talked to so of my friends that have discus and they have said that as long as it is stable it isn't so important...yet others tell me that my water is to hard in st. paul, mn and i need to soften it or they will die...i would like to resolve this so i know the truth for my fish...so the main q. is how important is the water hardness?

The truth is most fish in the aquarium world are not wild caught and can adapt to your water. If you get wild caught discus it is a whole different ball game. You have to adjust to their water conditions.

Hope this helps

kinda, but i was going more for numbers or if they would really die in hard water or be stressed...in general

I keep my domestic stendker discus in a pH of 7.8 with a gh of 8-10 and a kh of about 12. That is considered moderately hard water. I have not had any problems at all. Here is a picture (I got them at about silver dollar sized):

You should buy a test kit and test your water. This is the only way you're going to find out. If other species of SA fish can live in your water, then domestic discus can.

the hardness test kit is the only thing i don't have, i have a silver aro, tsns, jd, common pleco, gold nugget pleco, a severum, black ghost knives, firemouth and a few others for s.a. fish...

msjinkzd stendker discus are you sure? I don't doubt that they are, the pigon blood has peppering. I don't see many german discus with peppers. it's ok he/she just has freckles
