I'm looking to get a few discus and I was hoping to put them in a 30g but everyone I have talked to has told me I have to have atleast a 55g and atleast 6 fish. Do you agree? I just need some input on this.

Thanks

The majority of people will tell you this and they are correct.

Really, I had no idea they had to be kept in groups of at least 6. I've had three together in a 50 since they were small,( around 2'') and now they are in a 280gal with some Stingrays and other fish and the largest is almost 8'', and the other two are 6''+. I know they are happy because one of them smiles at me all the time.... seriously.

4 is the minimum. Unless you can get a bonafide pair which is very expensive, I would not suggest keeping less than 4 due to bully issues.

Hi.. I agree with Lupin... Either a proven pair (spawned and fertilized eggs) or at least 4.. preferably 6... I really suggest you go for it now and upgrade the size of the tank. The smaller the tank the less margin for error and the more maintenance you are gonna have to do.. A 55 setup doesn't cost that much especially if you get juvies and go bare bottom while they are growing out. Look on your local Craigslist for a used tank and then clean the heck out of it.. Good luck whatever you decide to do...Sue:D

You've answered your own question

They were all right about that but if you will just keep a pair, 30 gal is enough, also if this pair were to be breed. but make sure you have a good filter 'cause smaller tanks get dirty faster than bigger tanks. AND ALWAYS CHECK YOUR PARAMETERS!!!
