Can I add 3-4 discus to my 190 tank?

I have good filtration and do a 30-40% water change every week, sometimes more.

What I'm wondering is that I can add some young discus to my tank, without having to feed them constantly in order to grow them quickly.

I'm thinking feeding them twice a day, what do you think?

I have angels, tetra and other small, non aggressive fish..

Filtration is two Eheims 2217 with uv and one fx6.

Temp is 28 degrees.

I know the angels are very fast feeding fish, but I can manage to spread the food around.

Any input?

There is a thread in general aquarium forum about this tank if you need to see more about other fish.
Or just ask me.

I have 10 small angels now, but will remove 4-5 when they get larger.

I think with your feeding plans, WC schedule & planted tank w/ substrate, you would be better off buying adult fish. They are much more pricey, but your plans are not ideal for growing out young discus. I think adults would likely do fine, maybe add another WC, but you have light stocking in a 190gal, one 30-40% WC should suffice for adults.

If you want to grow out young discus, you could always set up a spare 55gal tank, go bare bottom until they are adults & then move them over to your display.

Thanks for the advice, i'll see if i can get hold of larger specimens instead.
Or i might set up a bare bottom tank at work and keep them there.

I appriciate the advice, I was 5 mins away from confirming my order!

I can get hold of 5-6 inch sized discus from stendker.

Or regular 3 and a half sized discus.

I'm thinking the 5-6 inch ones would be better suited, they are very pricey though (but my boss is giving me a bonus in a few weeks, so i think i can manage)

If they are larger than the angels it should be okay. I've heard of some issues where angels bully discus too much though, angels can be troublesome.

I'm going to read through the stendker website about how to take care and introduce the discus.

Looks like i'm going to reduce some of my angels, and to treat the remaining for tapeworms first.

Seems like an awful lot of hassle to be honest, and if they are 5-6 inches they have 2-3 years left to live?

I need to think this carefully over before invest almost a 1000 dollars in fish and food (stendkers own food)

5-6in fish fron Stendker could be as young as 10-12months. A well cared for discus can go 8-10years. Great choice in breeder by the way.

Definitely make sure you have the tapeworm issue conquered before you introduce the discus. They are way too expensive to risk. You'll see alot of people keep discus only aquariums for the very reason that they don't want to risk a $200 discus for a $2 tetra or $5 angel.

For your tank & the planned WCs & feedings - yes. 3-4in fish will likely not grow to full potential in your setup.

If you want to buy fish that size, growing them out in a barebottom tank with multiple feedings daily, and more frequent WCs is the way to go. They wouldn't necessarily die in your setup, but you wouldn't see alot of growth.
