Hey fish hobbyists!
I'm thinking about starting a discus tank.
So I just want some answers to these questions.
1. Is it possible to buy a 5cm(2inch) discus and successfully grow them to adult size? (It seems hard to)
2. Is a 32 gallon(60*45*45) tank enough?
3. how many discus could I keep in the 32 gallon tank?
4. how many water changes should I do a week?
5. what substrate should I use?
6. should I decorate the tank?
7. do I need a light?
8. what size discus should I buy?
9. what filter should I use? (I'm on a budget)

Let me throw in some clarification. By nature discus require high temperatures and large amounts of food as a result. This also promotes bacterial growth in the water, and as discus naturally tend to inhabit lower pH water (sometimes with lots of tannic acids) where bacterial counts are lower this creates a general intolerance to high bacterial counts, which occurs with high temperatures and rotting food.

Personally I say the tank is quite a minimum for a grow out for a group of fish. We're talking daily siphoning of debris and VERY frequent water changes.

So with this information I'll say:

1: Yes, the bigger you buy them the easier it will be to raise though.

2: Not long term. 75 gallons is a good size for 5-6 adult discus. You could house a pair in there for breeding, just keep an eye out for aggression.

3: Only a pair when breeding

4: Daily is best, they make a lot of waste.

5: None. Yo need the bottom to be spotless to reduce decay of food and the resulting bacterial and nitrate load.

6: Not too much.

7: A dim light will help you to observe and watch out for any issues.

8: The biggest that you can afford.

9: Canister filters are best, powerful hang on backs like Aquaclear are also good. You need to be able to catch as much debris as possible and have strong biological filtration. Sponges can be used but must not be relied on for the majority of your filtration.

Hope this helps! :)

Hey man just my twopenny bit . Of course the other guys are right even though a bare bottom tank with no decoration and 2 discus and dim light doesn't sound like my cup of tea . Not to mention the daily water change. But for what it's worth buying discus is the best way to go at least you know what you're getting . I once bought 5 1.5inch discus the one day and only one of them grew to 4/5 inches the rest never really thrived so I always bought big after that at least you knew it was a good fish.
That's my bit .

I have a post out on the marketplace. I'm selling my whole set up with Seven 6 to 7 inch discus, with a 75 gallon and filters and heater and light. If you are in California you should take a look. selling for a 1000 bucks even
