discus questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Personally, I keep discus with my shoal of loaches, bichirs, and there is a red sev in the mix too. Granted they all grew up together might make a difference, but "typically" they aren't supposed to go together. I keep my water at 7.2, temp at 80-81F. When the discus were smaller they were raised in a growout for a few months, treated for parasites, just in case, until they got plopped into their current home. They aren't shy whatsoever. Most are that I have seen. I wouldn't expect to be able to do this with adults, since most around here are wild caught and would need the typical discus parameters. My 2 cents. :)

Also, driftwood will lower the ph.

They require soft water 2-3 DH and more alkaline water pH 6.5. They need many hiding places to hide becuz they are very shy fish.

If pH is <7, it's acidic not alkaline. Also discus are not really that shy, my previous discus would swim up to the tank whenever they see me.

What are you going to do about the DH? You can us PH Down if you need to get to 6.5.

DO NOT USE pH down, the pH will just bounce back up and so there will be pH swings. Unless the discus are wild- caught (which I don't recommend for beginners), any pH will be fine as long as it is stable.

i think they make water softener and i have ph down but my ph is 7.0

Don't use pH down, your pH is currently fine.
