i just got some 4 month old discus off a friend and in by tank they seem really dull.

What do you mean by "dull" ? Dull as in boring, or their colors are dull. Water quality and quality of food affect discus colors. To keep them at their best, discus should have the best water quality at all times. Which means in some cases, daily water changes. If they are boring, well, they're discus. 
By the way, they probably would not care much for a brightly lit tank.
