YOU CANT USE SALT ON DISCUS!!!!

can you? :uhoh:

Yes you most certainly can...I have used salt in super heavy concentrations up to 1 cup per 10 gallons!! They tolerate salt quite well and actually enjoy having a little bit thrown in the tank from time to time. Salt eases osmotic stress and helps them deal with stress, such as being shipped and placed into a new tank. For the most part, as a theraputic use, 2-3 tablespoons per 10 gallons is welcomed in any discus tank.

The discus is the most sensitive fish in there, amp up your filtration if you can and yes salt can be used with discus, use 1/2 as much as you would for hardier fish. so use 1 teaspoon per gallon for at least seven days, I feel it is best not to trim the fins, I believe that if the infection is still ongoing all you are doing is spreading it into a healthy portion of the fin., if salt does not clear it up in a week go with a commercial anti-biotic.

Increase your water changes, add in salt (5-6 tablespoons per 10 gallons is a good start), and use acriflavine at the recommended dosage. Keep this up for a week or two...if no progress after the first week, send me a PM.

IMO, and IME, Pimafix and Melafix is pure crap...one of those feel good, does little type of products. You're much better off spending the same amount on an 80 pound bag of salt, which is much more useful. Again, this is just my opinion, but I have had VERY little success when using it on multiple occasions.

Also, if the fin rot is bad enough, you can trim the fins as they will grow back over the course of several weeks. BUT, this is only recommended after you have stopped the spread and have it under control. You would trim the fins only if the fins would grow back ragged or uneven.

Hiya Dkarc, I know that you have more exp. with discus than I do, I don't care for them so I don't keep them.
It is good to hear that discus are so much less sensitive to salt than I had been told. I too am a fan of salt. I am also glad you agree that trimming fins should only be done after the infection is stopped, I saw an oscar, not mine, that trimming had been tried on prematurely and the infection immedeately stated at the trimmed sites.
