I am getting ready to put together a 55g discus tank . . .was going to start with 5 juvenile discus, a small school of cardinal tetras and some corys . . .big question was this . . .I was wanting to know about the practicality of putting an eel in, a fire eel specifically. Have been doing some research and found few instances of this being tried, but in the few I did find there were no problems reported. Any thoughts on this or other related advice? Thanks!

i have an 18" fire eel in with about 15 discus, they are pretty mellow fish. Just dont feed live food

If I ever had a problem it was too much love in the tank. You'll be fine and they both love worms.

You may run into a problem with the fire eel and corydoras or tetras, depending on the size of the eel.

Don't know much about eels, but juveline discus are quite timid to start with. If you are going to put an eel with them I would wait until you discus have become confident with their surroundings and are hand feeding before introducing you eel.

Cheers

Eels like to hide in the substrate, and won't pose a problem with discus... tetras and corydoras are another thing all together.

Wow, reading this post was fate. I just saw a good size fire eel the other day and was thinking about it...

Here comes a minor derail- sorry in advance AmputatedBrain.
-Are they cool (don't mind the pun) with 84 degree water? The discus have to come first.
-Is 100 bux for a ~20+ incher fair? I'm not 100% on the size because I wasn't really considering it at the time I saw him. But, he was big.

My big fire eel is gental and dosen't bother anyone... but cardinals, they are easy snacks, they are slow and bite sized, not to mention the fact that they tend to sleep on the gravel. NO CARDINALS WITH FIRE EELS!!!! lol
