How do you guys feel about this combo? How many discus should I get? Can I keep anything else? Its 180 gallon tank

Thanks
Larry

I'm keeping that combo in a 240 with no problems. I just had to wait till my juvenile discus were 3" to avoid my 17" ARO from eating them. My ARO was curious the first day or so. Now he pretty much ignores them. If you got a smaller ARO you probably wouldn't have any problems.
Oh and my Ray is a Rectic. Someone posted on here having a Ray that was eating everything he put in the tank.
A 180 is probably too small a tank. AROs get really big!

Well I may give it away once it passes 24 inches. So I think I am going to add discuss to the tank once it is setup. I will probably introduce t hem first, but dam are they expensive.

Your tank is beautiful but I can't afford something that big right now so this will hav to do. Thanks for feedback

I've had my rectic since July of last year. The only issue I have is that I can't seem to break him from eating black worms.
When I started it was Rectic and ARO with 3 clown loaches in a 55 gal.
In September I got the 240, moved the livestock and added 2 clown loaches.
I got my 8 Turquoise Discus about 3 months ago (they were only 1.5" to 2") and put them in the 55 to grow.
I just added the Discus to the 240 about 3 weeks ago (at that time they were 3.5" to 4")
My only concern at the time was the ARO. He was about 16" to 17" and how he would get along with the Discus. The ARO was very curious the first day or two, but since then, mostly ignores them. So if you have the option you might want to add a smaller ARO last.

That seems to be the general consensus ondiscuss and arowana. So I guess te retic is the smallest Ray I can have in my aquarium. How is their temperment? Why are they so fragile to keep? I will put the smallest arowana I can find once I stock my tank with the other fish.

Thanks
Larry

From what I've heard, people seem to have trouble getting their newly acquired rectics to eat. I got mine online last August, and drip acclimated for at least an hour. After 3 days when he hadn't started eating, I contacted the shipper and asked him what he had been feeding his rays. He had been feeding ghost shrimp. As soon as I put the shrimp in the tank "Ray" began to get excited and ate 1 or 2. The next morning they were all gone. That evening he began to eat the live blackworms, a little at a time to start with but as time progressed, he started eating like a pig and has continued ever since.
Early on I monitored nitrates very closely and did water changes whenever they went over 20ppm. Slowly, after I became more confident, I waited till nitrate hit 40 ppm before I did a WC.
His temperament is very mellow.

I had a rectic.....burned his face on a heater the 4th day i had him and then my plecos ate him....Other than that, he was pretty cool..lol
