I'm a :newbie: when it comes to discus, but here we go. I have a 29 gallon tank with carpinte escondidos in it. Once the escondidos are big enough to go in my main tank, the 29 will be empty. Soooo, I want to put some discus in there. It will be semi-planted with driftwood. It has a jebo canister on it that runs at about 350 gph. So here's my questions:
Can I keep discus in a 29 gallon tank? If so, can I put 5 in there?
Will they breed in a 29?
What are good tank mates for discus in a 29? (need a top dweller) (I was thinking 10 serpae tetras, some shrimp, and cory catfish)

Thanks in advance!:D

Eh... If you are good to them (lots of water changes) you could get by with maybe a pair... But that would be it nothing else. And how tall is the tank anyways? Remember these guys can get up to like 8 inches... (Personally I really wouldn't suggest using the tank for discus at all.)

it's a standard 29- 30x12x20 (lwh).
I'm having trouble deciding, I see discus all the time in tanks this size, I just don't know how well they do. It's right next to my bed, so I really want to put nice looking fish like discus in there. I'll forget the shoal completely, because of what you said, but still not positive about the pair. I am definitely adding some sort of bottom feeder like shrimp.

Anyone else? Breeding pair of discus in a 29, only other tank mates would be shrimps?

I keep and breed discus.....I breed in 20s HIGH and 29s....I also raise my fry in 29s.....You can keep 5 discus in a 29, if you are just doing it while they are small, and like already said, hammer it with daily water changes.......I would only put a couple of bristlenose plecos in there if it were mine. You can view my discus at freewebs.com/discustrader
Send me a PM if you have any further questions....Once they get larger, just keep a pair in there.

Ya only a breeding pair with really good w/c other than that no go

yeah, I'm gonna do a breeding pair with some ghost shrimp. My filter has a 12x turnover, so I think that that is good filtration. I'll do water changes every other day if need be.

I'm not going to say two Discus in a 29 will not work, it will. I feel your filtration is adequate provided the current it produces is not too strong, you could use a well aged sponge filter with the same results, and a small HOB filter. Water quality in a tank that small could also become and issue. Will the tank be bare bottom or planted? I've kept Discus for years not to breed but for their beauty and have always had them in planted tanks, which not only helps them feel secure resting among the Vallisneria but improves water quality. Water changes will imo require 2x 50% per week to get the most out of them you can, daily water changes will make keeping them more of a job than a pleasure. I have never liked keeping fish in bare bottom tanks, that's me some don't mine the antiseptic lfs look but I've always liked my tanks to look as natural as a glass box filled with water can. Unless you're keeping them to breed Discus really do better in groups of 5 or more. Another suggestion would be two pair of Rams and a school of ~12 Cardinal Tetras in a planted 29 with some Amano shrimp for clean up and Algae duty, this would make a beautiful display and much lower maintenance. Just a thought to throw out there you could look up Takashi Amano to see some excellent examples of what I'm talking about. Either way, good luck.
