Hi All,

I am thinking of going the Discus route.
My stats are as follows:

240L lightly planted, gravel and loads of bogwood.
Ph 7.6
KH 7 (reduced from 15 using Seachem KH/PH Down)
GH 14

I have 3 wild caught Plecs in the tank with the above water stats and they are doing well.

So, would it be ok to have tank bred Discus with the above water parameters?

Oppinions/advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i woulsnt get wild discus ph is too high and get rid of the plecos they will suck on the discus trying to get the slime off them

Any fish will adjust to any environment if acclimated properly.. As for the plecos sucking the slime off the Discus.. Its very rare where theres cases like that, but they do happen.

the plecos may get too large for that tank.and there is a chance they may bother the discus. I would go for no less than 4 inch discus. much less trouble to raise. domestic or wild. I have adult wilds in 7.6 ph. been in my tank for 15 months and are doing fine.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. I am not sure if I will be keeping the Plecs. Haven't decided on that yet. (They are a Rusty and Galaxy), or could move them to another tank.

My main concern is the water parameters and gravel bottom.

Thanks

Water parameters are fine just as long as you acclimate slowly.. as for the gravel.. Don't do it.. Go with sand or bare bottom.

a fine gravel is ok for larger discus. imo sand is the best. your water is fine. just stop using the ph/down. you don't need it and you will do more harm to your fish than doing nothing. if you want to breed wilds then lower your ph with RO. never ever chase your ph, kh, gh, or anything else with chemicals.

i wouldnt mix discus with plecos because they say that plecos will suck on the slime of the discus, but on the other hand if you really want plecos in a discus tank, go with BN plecos, they wont suck the slime off your discus.

also, i have tank bred discus, but ive been hearing that wild caught are harder to care for, as well as juviniles, you will need presise parameters, frequent water changes, etc.

The part about wild Discus being harder to keep is false. As long as they are acclimated properly and your water parameters are a constant, they should be no harder to keep than Domesticated Discus.
