Recently I went to the fish store and fell in love with a couple of small discus fish. I really want some but they do get large and I want to make sure if I own them they will be happy and healthy.

I know it's probably a crazy question, but I will ask anyway. Can you keep discus in a 20 gallon (tall) tank with swordtails and tetras?

If not, what "larger" fish can I keep with my Tetra's and swordtails? Is there any combination of large and small that will get along? I want something larger to contrast with the small guys.

Not in a 20 gal for life. You really shouldn't house any lrge cichlid in an aquarium that size for long. Look into something like firemouths or convict cichlid. They don't get really lrge but they have really large personalites. They probably wont eat your other fish but babies wont last.

I do like the firemouths! I have read about people having them in the same tank as Swordtails and mollies but I am not so sure Tetra's (specifically neon Tetra's). I can see a fire mouth snacking on them. Thoughts?

i never kept any firemouths but a warning for convicts If you go with convicts just get females. Males will eventually claim territory and kill everything a breeding pair will be worse.

Between the two, I'd rather have firemouths then convicts.
