I have been an avid aquarist for about twelve years and I have finally decided it is time to do something different.I am thinking of setting up a discuss tank and I would like some input and some advice on what I should do. I am already planning on buying an R/O unit to mount to my tank. But what I am really thingking about is what I can do to have my tank set up to where I can have an automatic top off just like they do with saltwater aquariums. Is there anyway I can have that or am I thinkihg too big? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :headbang2

The biggest rule with discus is the good old fashion water change, the more the better. Most breeders do at least 50% a day, so if you follow that regimen I don't think you need to worry about topping your water off. There are others that do far less but the serious discus guys seem to swear by daily changes.

well I was thinking that if I do not do the auto top off, then I would a 25-30% water change a week. But that is why I want to know about the auto top off so I do not have to worry about it.

The reason people use automatic top offs in salt water tanks is so the salinity does not change. In a discus tank if you have a large amount of them some people will create constant overflow systems. You plumb a surface overflow and then constantly run fresh water in to the tank. This is a little complicated for hobby tanks and I would just recomend doing 50% a week or 7% a day water change.

Howdy,

What do you want to disuss?

I don't think that an automated top-off system is necessary for discus. Just perform regular water changes or construct a flow-thru system with an R/O + tap water mix.

ps
let me guess: rallysman is your big idol. ... LOL

no rallysman is not my biggest idol, I have just been wanting to them for sometime and I decided that now is as good a time as any. I was thinking of the flow through system, but I do not know where to go to get info for the flow through system and references?

Howdy,

I personally like play sand, it still contains some clay as compared to pool filter sand which doesn't. I also enriched mine with some laterite (110 oz/220 gal). Sand is best for plants, better than gravel. If you have digging fish, though, it might get into your filter outlet. In that case go with small gravel or potted plants in big gravel.
