This morning I saw a Jack Dempsey at the local Pet Supplies Plus(9+ inch fish in tiny display tank :shakehead ). It's head is partially eaten away- one eye is OK, the other is badly damaged, and the top of it's head is eaten down to the skull, or nearly so. Damage extends down the left side of the head to the jaw. Girl at the store tells me it's looking better(!), as there was fuzz all over the area previously; says she added salt, and thinks it has helped. She thinks it got this from some goldfish that are in it's tank as feeders.
I should have taken a picture; I will later today, if I can make time to get over there again. If so, I will post it here.
Anybdy have an idea of what this could be? Treatment? It bothers me to see a fish in this condition; I don't know if I can help, but it can't hurt to ask.

I've never seen anything like that. looks like it was a bacterial infection that went untreated for to long. i thing he would need a all in one medicine like tetra lifeguard. hope this helps

Looks like a case of acute Flexibactor columnaris the way the mouth is extended, aka ducklips.

It is most virulent when temps are above 82'F.

well, nobody can accuse you of exaggerating.

Aww man, that's really sad looking.... Hope you're able to help him. My LFS owner come in one day to find a red hook silver dollar half eaten and floating sideways. He put him in a tank by himself, treated with salt and melafix and within a month he had grown back... now he looks perfect :)

Stopped in today- he still looks rough, but definitely healing. Girl at the store tells me he's eating now, too.
It amazes me sometimes what a fish can recover from.
