New Fish Species Eats And Replaces Your Tongue!

Underwater creatures do NOT get any creepier than this!

This little critter that you see here to my left is known as Cymothoa exigua, or the "tongue biter". It was recently discovered inside the mouth of a red snapper bought from a London market.

The parasite had grabbed ahold of the tongue and slowly eaten it away until only a stub was left. Then, naturally, it latched onto the stub and became the fish’s tongue. As disgusting as that may sound, the full story is even more unsettling.

It enters through the fish’s gills and uses claws to attach itself to the base of the snapper’s tongue and survives by drinking blood from an artery. Once the tongue has been gotten rid of, it attaches itself as a new tongue, and manipulate’s the fish’s food and consumes the free food particles as the fish eats.
Somehow, there are scientists in this world that are excited by the find, while the rest of us remain disgusted. The tongue biter was found in Australia in a recent ocean research expedition that has covered the past four years. The study also found hundreds of previously unknown soft corals, brightly coloured jellyfish, crabs and other creatures they believe may hold the key to curing some human diseases.

However, this little guy has to be the highlight of their finds (at least as far as creepy jaw-dropping species are concerned). Luckily, we can all breathe a sigh of relief in knowing that Cymothoa poses no danger to humans since it only attaches to fish tongues.

Is everyone now thoroughly grossed out? Anyone plan on swimming with their mouths open ever again? Let us know in the comments! And make sure to check out Whales Taught To Speak!.

That's not a fish- just some isopod. I've seen these guys attached to the gills of fish I've caught before. They feed on the host fishes's blood.
