Hi I was wondering at how quickly disks that have been damaged grow back to a fully round disk again. I have 2 newly imported Marbled motoros and the female has quiet a bad disk and the male has a couple of chunks missing. I picked them up a couple of days ago and were quiet stressed due to shipping. Once in my tank the did not look good the male was curled pretty much all the way round and the female was starting to curl. Added with her injuries it didnt look good. I added melafix to the tank and the temp is about 81f. Today the curling has stopped and I am still adding melafix. They have not eaten yet either but will try with different food although not majorly skinny which is good. My main concern is getting them relaxed and healed. I have kept the lights off for the majority of the day been on for about 2 hours. As I said the curling has stopped for now and they have started to mave a little bit but not much. Just looking for other suggestions from people as you all know these are not my first rays so have not jumped in the deep end so to say. Here is a few pics of the pair for you to see.

Prepare yourself Brother, you are going to receive oodles of info from myself and others.

I would focus on maintaining the best parameters with your filters first. The rays will heal.....and hopefully recover:(

Ease off with the additives.....some will suggest salt, some do not. I have no suggestion myself.

Allow them peace and quiet for a while as you are doing. Consider some very light feedings, to stimulate them.
Very finely chopped raw shrimp (de-shelled) or some live black worms, even a nightcrawler chopped.

KEEP US POSTED.

*PS: Was the shipment as expected from the dealer? Contact them and ask any ?'s that pop into your mind*
Respectfully,
FireMedic.

keep water perfect!!! my retic had a small 3cm cut on the disk and it closed in two weeks.....keep water clean.

pristine water... some salt.... up the temp 84-86f and it will heal... it may not go perfectly round again but it will heal...

Try ghost shrimp. I have mentioned before in other posts that motoros for some reason cannot resist them. If you saw my resent thread about my new motoro and flower ray you will see how skinny my new motoro is. It's disk is un even, it had fish lice, ammonia burn, and is very skinny to the point that it's belly was sunken in. One hour after putting in the tank it ate ghost shrimp like they were going out of style. She still won't eat worms or frozen shrimp, but I am working on that. Keep water warm, add some salt, and keep an eye on them.

do you gut load the ghost shrimp first???

I don't feed them a lot of ghost shrimp, mainly just to get them eating until I can ween them onto other foods. I have the guy at the lfs catch the ones that are carring eggs (here lately they all seem to be carrying eggs) I usually just buy a couple of dozen and dump them in the tank. I then start to offer worms before all the ghost shrimp disappear. Has worked so far.

Here are 2 pics of my male. First is the day I bought him, second was several months later. I think something took a big bite out of him earlier in his life. His disk will never completely fill back in.

Good luck with yours.
