I was wondering if there are any regular household items you can use to dissinfect your nets after use. I know there are products made just for dissinfecting aquarium nets, but I'm looking for a cheaper solution. Thanks.

This will work for all aquarium equipment, including sponge filters and nets:
Dilute regular household bleach (no detergents or fragrances added) 1 part to 9 parts warm water. Soak for 15 minutes and rinse with water. Rinse again. Rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse. Rinse one more time. (Actually, I just throw the stuff in the tub and let the shower run on it for about half an hour while I do something else.) If you want to use the disinfected item immediately, rinse it off one final time in water + dechlorinator. Otherwise, allow it to air dry, and the chlorine will decompose and evaporate. i hang all of my nets on hooks and they air dry perfectly... never just lay them down somewhere..i also try and have a good number of nets of various sizes to avoid as much as possible the constant use of one in to all the tanks..

Will using bleach change the color of your nets?

could lighten them up but not much if diluted to the proper concentration amount.. { weak }of course always be careful with bleach.... in every way...The easiest method of isolating
diseases is to use a net per tank. If you don't have
enough nets, when your finished using one, rinse with hot water and
hang it to dry. The combination of heat and complete dehydration is
quite effective against aquatic contagions. Qtanks should always have
their own nets. If you do this on a regular basis and do not have anything major going on in your tanks.. you should be quite safe..Using Bleach is more of a extreme measure...{inexpensive way to keep your nets sanitary}..but if you just use hot water and hang dry you should be fine..

I think using a mix of water and potassium permanganate is quicker and safer. (I use Jungle's Clear Water from Walmart). Just fill up a bucket halfway with water, put in enough Pp to make it dark pink, and soak your nets in them for 30 mins. Then rinse a few times and you're done.
