I am currently stocking my 220 planted tank with south american fish. so far, my 2 inhabitants are a cichla mono and a motoro ray. both are juveniles. seeing as it is a planted tank, i do not want to use silver dollars... does anybody know what i can put in there to make the tank more "alive?"

Giant Danios and the different Aussie Rainbow fish make fast moving colorful dithers for big fish. I'm using Boesmani and turquise bows in my 125 at home.

hey Downset how's that Royal GT doing? I'd use some rainbows as dithers. They look great and are fast as hell.

that royal GT was my favorite fish of all time. however, I wanted to start a tank from scratch that was strictly amazonian. i returned him in return for a cichla mono... and have regretted it since... but the GT would tear my plants up... but if i see them again im sure i'll pick one up cuz that guy was the balls. he grew to about 6" and his colors were really bright. i recommend the Hikari bio-gold. expensive but the results were very obvious...

anyways, after that painful reminder, i didnt want to use silver dollars due to their habits of munching on plants. i have java fern and amazon swords, with a mother plant. i also wanted to stick with an amazon fish... so this is not looking good. oh well, the motoro wouldnt like all that activity up top anyways, cant win em' all.

Have you considered any of the Brycon species? Depending on the species, they are medium to large (8-20+ inch) predatory schooling characins from Central and South America. They don't get as large as dorado, but have much of the same attitude. The most commonly available species is sold as "redtail brycon." I'm not certain whether this species is Brycon rubricauda or Brycon orbignyanus, but it's likely one of those two. I'd post a picture of some of mine, but I'm having a hell of a time with the pop-up blocker interfering w/ the attachment window here, even with the pop-up blocker turned off. :(
