Hi I've got a 70 Gallon tank its 4ft long by 19inches wide. And I have 2 blood parrots a jack Dempsey and a pleco. Im new to keeping cichlid's and was wondering if there would be enough room in my tank for dither fish and if there is what kind if any fish would work as dither fish. My blood parrots are around 5 inches and are still very shy and my jack Dempsey is about 2 inches. Thanks

I swear by danios, regular or giant for dithers.

Your tank is big enough for a shoal assuming your water changes are on point; better chance with giant danios, but your JD will probably make a meal of them once he gets to 7-8 inches.

Silver dollars can be good dithers and won't get eaten easily, but they are skittish

Love tigers, the JD may end up being quite harsh on them though; as they get chunky and wander into territory's at all levels of the tank

I would advise against tigers, they seem to like to kill each other off. My shoal has reduced to one which now picks on specific cichlids (my new cutteri being it's main target). If you can get some large rosy barbs, they are a better choice. I used to have striped/zebra barbs with my old parrots and other biggish cichlids and they were very active and peaceful but also a decent size.

If you like tiger barbs, then I say you can definitely do it at this stage. I would recommend doing about a dozen, no smaller than 1". If they are small, they can get picked off by the parrots. TB needs to be with a larger shoal otherwise they become destructive, especially towards each other. I've kept TB in the past, with the same shoal living for multiple years, and I had never experienced them killing each other off one by one. TB have always been one of my favorite fish, and I'm waiting for when my local Petsmart have them on sale again for $1. I plan on picking up about 20 and putting them in my 180 CA tank. The larger CA should induce a cool schooling effect from the TB :)
