I just upgraded my h. tatauaia to a 165 gallon tank. Currently his only tank mates are 1 6" ageneiosus catfish, 1 4" midnight catfish and 1 4" long nose raphael catfish. He was originally really territorial in his old 40g tank and he would chase the catfish around every time they tried to swim and he would bite them even though they were obviously too big to eat.

Now in the 165, 3'x2' of the tank have become his territory and he will go after anybody who ventures into his half. He has even killed feeder fish that swam on his side and just left them dead.

I am going to be adding 10-11 charax gibbosus and 2 more ageneiosus cats and I am thinking a school of something else hoping the schooling fish calms his nerves a little. I saw some African Red Eyed Tetras that caught my eye, but they may get eaten. I also debated chalceus, but IMO they seem to get boring.

Does anybody have any ideas on a cool schooling fish that I could throw in there? SDs and tinfoil barbs are also out of the question.

More Tats! My 7.5" guy chases my large SD's and Red Hooks but leaves all my dats alone. He never bites....just stalks and chases a litttel....I am adding a 6-7" Tat later this week....I hope they get along! I hear they like to partner up!

I had a group of three tats and they acted and moved around as if they were a large school. They have become pricey of late but if you can get more go for it!...Take a look at the congo tetra. They are a nice sized schooling fish and have a little toughness about them.

Chalceus are worse than boring, they are so skittish they cause other fish unessassary flights into the glass. They were good dithers when they were small @8" mine are becoming more of a pain then they are worth.

wont the tat end up eating the glass headstanders? but anyway that sounds like a bad ass school of mini monsters :D

I hope not for a while. They are all around 3-4" and he is 7", but they are very tall bodied.

I am hoping then the time comes that he tries to eat them, I can set up a 4 ft tank for some mini monsters.
