For other uses, see Dither (disambiguation).
Dither is an intentionally applied form of noise, used to randomize quantization error, thereby preventing large-scale patterns such as contouring that are more objectionable than uncorrelated noise. Dither is routinely used in processing of both digital audio and digital video data, and is often one of the last stages of audio production to compact disc.

one of the earliest [applications] of dither came in World War II. Airplane bombers used mechanical computers to perform navigation and bomb trajectory calculations. Curiously, these computers (boxes filled with hundreds of gears and cogs) performed more accurately when flying on board the aircraft, and less well on ground. Engineers realized that the vibration from the aircraft reduced the error from sticky moving parts. Instead of moving in short jerks, they moved more continuously. Small vibrating motors were built into the computers, and their vibration was called 'dither' from the Middle English verb 'didderen,' meaning 'to tremble.' Today, when you tap a mechanical meter to increase its accuracy, you are applying dither, and modern dictionaries define 'dither' as 'a highly nervous, confused, or agitated state.' In minute quantities, dither successfully makes a digitization system a little more analog in the good sense of the word.

Dither fish are used to distract agressive fish so that they are less agressive toward each other. Typically schooling fish are used because of the numbers of fish and that they stay together. Dithers are also used to give some fish a sense of security. Another example of their use is to help fish form mated pairs. I don't really understand that one but it is due to their behavior in a social group.

Chompers have a good def. on "dither"; and dither fish are any fish usually shoaling ones that are active, and their behavior causes a calming effect on cichlids or shy fish that observes them, and when they see the dither fish swimming around, they feel more secure sensing there's no large predators around.

i've always called the fish we use to bring out our shy fish into the open 'dithers'.

fish used to diffuse aggression and get chased around by my cichlids are referred to as 'targets'

am i wrong?

sounds right to me.

Thank you guys a lot...

Question 2 I have a 125 with 2 large Oscars and a large Pike...
I also have a lot of hiding spots, Is thier a shoaling fish that may do well in this situation? I noticed my local Public aquarium keep very large predators with schools of Tetra... Can this be accomplished or will the Tetra just become a balanced diet???

There is a difference between TARGET fish and DITHER fish although they are often confused. The main difference being target fish are actually hit/harried/hunted. This is usually to give the lowest fish on the pecking order some "self worth". The target fish is considered expendable on this social order. Target fish can also strengthen a mating bond for breeding pairs by giving the breeding pair a mutual enemy and some imagined threat.
Ideal target fish are tough and fast but not threatening or defensive species since they are often considered expendable. You dont want a target fish ever turning the tables on your REAL fish.

DITHER fish on the other hand simply provide a distraction. Used to coax shy fish or build confidence or to show other fish how to eat. These are often schooling fish and not intended to be harrassed by other fish.

I think everyone has the general concepts right.

Amazon, the oscars will eat neons so your dithers will become feeders LOL. The large public aquarium probably feeds so well that predators are too lazy to chase neons. Are your oscars shy? I have used large Australian rainbows as dithers and salmontail catfish as targets with oscars.
