I plan on starting up a new 100 gallon tank for raising an umbee or a similar cichlid which grow similar in size. The size of the fish will start at 2-2.5" or so.

What type of dithers does everyone recommend? Just looking for some nice looking dithers which will not attack my cichlid when it is that small but will promote the cichlid to roam around :nilly:

I hope you are only planning on growing the umbee out in that tank and then moving it to a larger one. An umbee by itself needs a tank much larger than that, I would say at least a 240 gallon. They get up to around 2 feet total length, maybe a little more... you would need a tank at least 3 feet wide.

For dithers though, silver dollars and tinfoil barbs are the only ones that I can think of that wouldn't be able to fit into a full grown umbee's mouth.

Yea I definitely plan growing out the umbee into a larger tank eventually. I'm just looking for some dithers to keep the tank active for now in the smaller tank. Would silver dollars and/or tinfoil barbs be good dithers even when the umbee is still tiny?

Try some Black Skirt Tetras,Silver Dollars,Tin Foil Barbs (maybe nippy though)the list is endless.

Yea I know! so many to choose from....just looking for the most common amongst everybody for when they start to raise cichlids similar to umbees.
