Hey guys Question about dithers. I have a 90G with a JD, GT and red sev all around 4" I put 5 4" silver dollars as dithers and they suck. the SD dont school at all and just fight with each other one of them even goes after the sev. Is there other dithers that look good I could put with the cichlids?
I was thinking a dozen or so tiger barbs to make the tank look alive but they may become snacks for the GT.
Thanks for any advice in advance.

Get a separator ready. The GT will beat up the JD in a few months. Don't think any other dilters will work better than SD.

separator? for what? the JD and GT get along great. I was wanting to get rid of the Silver dollars and get other dithers.

I wouldn't say that will happen for sure, it could or it could be the other way around. It could also be they get along fine which may easly be the case if they were raised together from a young age. My JD & GT each have their own end of the tank and never bother with each other, other than the occasional chase if one get too close to others turf, sometimes they cruse around together. How long have the SDs been in the tank? To be honest unless your fish are hiding all the time I wouldn't even bother with dithers. Once those fish grow out they'll be very comfortable in that 90.

If you keep 4-5 tiger barbs together, they will likely keep their fin-nipping to themselves. Tinfoil barbs are a terrible choice for dither fish unless you have a very large aquarium. These fish should be kept in large schools, 4-5, and since they get so big, a school that size requires well over 100 gallons. Most cichlids don't really need dither fish anywhere near this size and will be just as happy with a school of Tiger Barbs.

I like using Bala Sharks for dithers they are active and IMO attractive fish, plus they get a decent size.
