well i decided to make some tanks into divisions,to keep fish seperated
here is what i used and what is needed for this project
i used a 33L tank it's dims are 12"H x 12"W x 48"L,now it's inside dims are 11.75"H x 11.65"W x 47.4"
whats needed
#1.
2- tubes aquarium safe silicone,i used 3m No#8663 clear or #8664 black silicone, and used GE silicone 1 100% also, you use those besides allglass or perfecto aquarium silicones,
#2
a caulking finishing tool (helps make it look nice and neat)available at menards as a hard plastic or at home depot in a tool kit with soft rubber tip (your choice)
#3
caulking gun of course
#4
glass cutter
#5
tile spacers 1/4" blue or paint mixing stix
first off glass,i used 1/8" glass my first piece,it was a main 47.3"L x 11.5" piece cost's $14
CLEAN ALL GLASS WITH SOAP AND WATER
that divide's the tank in half via the length, slips right into place even with a brace just takes a bit of patience dont force anything,
now with that where you want it placed in this case straight down the middle
you have a width of 11.65" minus the 1/8" glass from the center piece now you have a 11.40" you want to leave a bit of room to move and posistion the pieces with out worring of cracking anything
now i did 2 tanks one with 18 divisions,one with 12,
all my tanks are drilled for drainage into a larger system so i wont discuss the bulk head cut out of the large center piece unless it is requested
first tank i had 16 pieces of glass cut 11" x 5.75" $2.50 each i left room at the top for any hang filters to be places with out hitting anything
the second tank i decided to go alley searching garbage picking for the city dwellers, for used windows and found 7 24" x 30" stripped out the glass and came back and measured this tank had same measurements as first so i cutted these out
(see link)
now i started by placing tile spacers under the main glass 1 every 8-9" used some masking tape to help hold it in place
i placed 2 dividers in back section with tile spacers under them also and taped the main place so it pulled tight against the rear section dividers and used some silicone or spray cans in front section to put pressure on the lower part of the main glass, this so when your laying silicone the glass is not bowiing or tilted but straight on,
i layed little beads about an inch long on all pieces all sides this is to help in creating a anchor system, now let dry for say 4 hours
it should be something like this
(see links)
now after those pieces are set dont remove anything
i started to place the front pieces one by one using tile spacers under these and all peices to be installed and just shifting/sliding the tubes/cans along until i have enough glass pieces in place that i could remove them, now finish installing all rear glass dividers with tile spacers also under them, making any mods to the glass as i go along as with anything even though you cut them to size and think everything should slide into place with ease there is always something that just not on cue
if you can use a glass cutter well chipping away abit of glass bits here and there should be firmiliar
if not it's a bit difficult to explain but thats what i had to do to a few pieces
it should be something like this by now
(see links)
