hi all, I’ve got to the point where I’m going to need an upgrade soon (hopefully by the end of the year) and have been looking at something around 8’ x 2’ x 30” but am wondering if it’s worth trying it myself... I love making things but havent got time to mess it up and have to save for a pre built 1 if it doesn’t work out! Anyone on here built anything big out of glass or know someone that has? Also recommended materials like silicone etc would help too.
TIA

Here in the uk a glass tank that size is pretty affordable, I'd have thought around £1000.

Or keep an eye on aquarist classifieds for a second hand one.

Given they are around so cheaply, and that you'd be buying glass at customer prices, not in bulk, I would struggle to see a lot in between DIY and buying one. But buying one you'd have the guarantee and reassurance that have been done correctly!

My 265 gallon is 7 feet long, 30 inches tall and 24 inches front to back, it is made out of 1/2 inch plate. approx weight empty is 700 lbs. I had looked into making one myself but cost to buy vs. build my own was only saving about 500 dollars U.S. you definitely need cross bracing throughout the span or you will have bowing issues. you can use just general fish tank safe silicone to attach the panels together. if you have any questions i can help as much as possible.

Yea it’s not as much the money as I just wanted to see if I could do it, but with the fish growing fast and limited spare time I might be better off just playing safe and buying 1. I’ll save the building stuff for my pond when they start outgrowing the aquarium ;)
