I posted this in my build journal but with the new subforum format I thought I should repost and link to it here for those who don't visit the tank building section.
I wanted a nice 3D background for my paludarium. I had some specific design elements in mind and didn't want to shell out the cash for one of the pre-made ones (plus, they don't come in a 40" height) so I decided to make my own. Most of the DIY stryofoam backgrounds I've seen are intended to look like rocks. I'm going for a flooded forest look so I wanted it to look like roots, which is a little harder to pull off successfully but I think I did pretty well.
Anyways, over the course of several weeks I turned this:
