I didn't want to do bucket or PVC type DIY canister. So I had a helluva time figuring this out till I stumbled on a home depot tote with a rubber gasket and six way latching. Tough and water proof:

I think I can make a canister filter here, Pipework is simple being the flat panel walls (I'm thinking bulkheads with pump outside), and it's freaking 20 gallons. I just found a Lifeguard aquatic pump on sale that'll push nearly 600 gallons at 3 feet head. Just perfect for a lightly stocked 75 gallon tank with 5/6 cichlids and live-bearers. Maybe a little overkill lol.

A killer canister for less than a hundred bucks? And it's not a complicated clusterfuk? Can it be?

I would be cautious. The container is probably designed to keep water out with pressure being applied from the outside.
I wouldn’t think it was designed to deal with internal pressure, I suspect it would probably leak.
You could have the pump drawing water from the container that may help but if it leaks air into the container eventually the pump may loos prime.
Or if there was a power outage it could act as a siphon.
It would have to be a very strong water and air tight seal.

Good point. I actually went down to Home Depot and found 90% of the containers had some sort of defect, lids must have been stamped bad or something so this is definite no-go.

The newer tool containers (DeWalt Ridgid, etc) seem sturdy and have metal laches and gaskets, but are pricy as heck. Went to Harbor Freight and their pistol box is almost perfect for my use, kinda small tho and the bigger one of course is $30 and still doesn't hold much. :-/ Maybe have to go the craigslist route.
