Large PVC gets expensive and you usually don't save much money over a commercially produced filter.
I would start with a Cornelous (Korney) soft drink keg. The Coke ones are a little bigger around and a little shorter. You can usually pick one up for around $25. Or look on CL for an old swimming pool cartridge filter.
