DIY Canister Filter Design

I wouldn't even go for mechanical filtration at that small of size, especially with 500gph, that's going to be a ***** to seal, the originator of the video used a cruddy tetra ph, I had one awhile back and its maybe pushing 100gph on a good day.

I don't see a pickle jar being the best option, try a 5 gal bucket make it worth it, perfect with a 500gph pump!

Or just go sump ;)

I have seen many attempts at DIY canister filters and the ones that are able to get the canister sealed usually are so difficult to get into that maintenance is almost impossible (very cumbersome at their very best).

After having switched to using sumps from canisters I don't find any canister filters to be all that great. I would certainly never switch back from a canister to a sump. If you want to DIY a filter then DIY a wet/dry filter. There are many many successful DIY wet/dry filters... I have not seen any DIY canisters that stood the test of time!

If you have to DIY a canister filter then pick up a Cornealous soda pop keg. You should be able to find them pretty cheap at any micro brew supply house or on Craigslist. Since they are stainless steel and made to seal upwards of 100psi I think they would be the best bet for a DIY canister.
