I have this military shipping box that has heavy latches and thick rubber gasket made out of high strengeth plastic. I was thinking of using the pressure relief valve hole to run the inlet tube through, and drilling a hole into the top with a 600gph pond pump in it for the return.

I will put the pump in the middle and get the plastic egg crate and make hoops around the pump, each one larger than the next, filling each section with different media.

There is some residual glue on the top, it comes off relatively easy, and seems like hot glue.
The dimensions are 24"x 26"x 13"
Any imput on this would be helpful.
Thanks,
Mike

would be hard to make it into a canister.

It might work good as a nitrate remover, where its just media being submerged, but i dont think it would be effective because there is no light coming iin

You don't need light coming in to be an effective canister filter.

I didn't like the way it opens lengthwise.

Plus, being a Marine myself, I know the type of punishment USMC gear goes through. I wouldn't bet that its aquarium safe on the inside no matter how you clean it.

Container looks double walled. Possibly foam filled.
Bulkhead fittings could be a real bother to seal.
Service to a thing that big, full of water, like 30g, and media would be more than I would want to do.
If you do go ahead and use it, take some pics along the way. Share how it either worked or failed, if you would.

I took the pressure relief valve off and it's solid. the only double part is the inside side walls, and I can reach my finger up to the seal. I was thinking of getting stainless steel rings, that got progressively larger and the height of the inside, drilled to use as baffles inside of this beast. with the pump in the center. I will use tubing instead of hard plumbing so I could take the inlet end out of the tank and allow the pump to emtpy itself.

i went through the same thing mostly i think just because i wanted to build something but then i found that it was goona cost as much or more than a new canister would, so i ended up buying a 350 magnum it will take a cartridge or media but its pretty sucky with media in it but the cartridge works awesome my water have never been clearer and this can be had for about 100 brand new

Do you KNOW what was stored inside it? Meaning from the time it left Supply still wrapped in plastic to the time you picked it up. If you got it DRMO, DO NOT do it.

The Corps does not give away new/unused gear. I would be very cautious with using it to filter something as sensitive as a fishtank.
