I used a 1200 Maxijet powerhead connected to the out-take.
I made a 2 foot long canister out of 4" PVC. The canister lays flat (horizontal).

I have two 'media socks' created from scouring pads that are 9" tall.
I also have Three 2" Aquaclear coarse sponges cut to size.

I plan to fill it as follows:
=Intake-------[Sponge-Sock-Sponge-Sock-Sponge]--------PowerheadOuttake=
That should take up the 2 feet.

Question is, what do I fill the 'socks' with?
Would I fill one with ammo chips and carbon and the other with bio media, whats your opinions? What stacking order should i use these, keeping in mind the canister lays horizontal.

The filter is for a 30gal rubbermaid feeder tank holding 200-300 convicts, all less than 1cm (so far)

I can include pictures if they will help.

Why fill the socks with anything? If they are scrubbies then you should be able to simply let them serve as mechanical filtration. Maybe you need some fine filtration like floss since you have both scrubbies and sponges in there.

i went with poly fill in one and 6 bags of aquaclear110 biomax in the other.

For very little $$$, you could use a "whole house" filter for your mech. and use the whole of your PVC for bio..thinking, you would only need to open it for cleaning a couple times a year.

I have some pics in the filtration forum with a topic by the same name.
Runs like a champ.
