As a Christmas present to my self I'm either going to build a canister or sump for my 55 later to be used on my 75. I watched Uarajoey's video and will be using that method if I go canister. As far as diy sump is it better or equal? If I do the sump I'd either do Rubbermaid or buy a 20l if that would work. I'm going for cheap and efficient. Any recommendations for pumps and bio media? Thanks.

I'm doing about same project but am going canister. Sump would probably be most effective.

i'll be doing a cannister also but in 2 stages. 1st will be a 5g bucket with sponges and the 2nd being a 5g drum filled with k1 media as moving bed filter... thats for my ~550g though! just unsure about pump yet.

I'm thinking about going canister with a mag-7. Will take up less room then a sump which is a big factor currently. I'm going to use 4" pvc at about 2.5 feet in length. The mag-7 is 700 gph not including the 5 foot of head it will have I think it would be enough.

Also for media I want to use ceramic rings but they are so expensive for the amount I would need. Would pot scrubbers be a good alternative.
