If the jar is plastic it will collapse. Otherwise, you got a good shot.

I tried something similar but smaller. the biggest pain in getting it working is making sure it's completely air tight. I got mine to where it had enough vaccume to draw in water, but then gravity would take over and start a siphon, and the pressure revealed plenty of tiny leaks. So I got annoyed and bought a zoomed 501 that was on sale...

Good luck!

lol looks like you will have fun cleaning but it should do i good job.
I have an old kitchen trash can with a mag 1800 dumping water in it.
It sits above the tank, and has plastic 1/2 inch screen that is held up about 1.5 inch above the bottom from the tabs that were in the can.
as filter. I used the foam made to put on beds under the sheet. For the drain, I cut a hole in the bottom and used pvc bath tub drain. IT works Great the foam is easy to take out and clean.
coast for my 1800 gal per hour. 20 bucks.
The mag 1800 was allready hooked up to under gravel screen but if ya want to ad that cost. I bought off ebay for 110 bucks> the trash can was going in the trash due to stains. So I just cant count its cost. LOL
130 bucks total to filter about 1800 gph..
that would be like 3 fx5 at 700 bucks.

I did something similar with a some pvc pipe and hose barbs, and a 100 gph pump. The problem is going to be the pump is way to small. Your probably only going to get a trickle of water out of it. I had my pump in the tank though, so I was pumping to the filter and then back up, so I had alot more head pressure. Also if I remember correctly the max those little pumps can pump is 4' high, and then it pretty much stops pumping. If I were you I would try scrubby pads instead of gravel. Hope this helps.

this was just a late night spark. i was just going to use it to filter anouther 1gal pickel jar with some craw fish, or a 10gal or even move it around to do a mock water change for some bettas, leave it on for 10 min or so and it should make the water crystal clear, due to it being already filled with one gallon of fresh water

Ha very nice, love the crawfish, I used to keep them, great in groups. It's fun to watch them argue about hierarchy. Glad your filter is doing the job-

wait...
