so ive been debating about switch lights for the last while and decided to go to a dual bulb 48" fixture for my 72" long tank... and thought all shop lights look silly just sitting on a tank and most cant as the bulbs hang below any sheild if they have them so i thought may as well try to make a canopy for it ....my bottom stand is made from 5/8" mdf so i thought may as well make it from the same stuff if not 3/4", so this is what im thinking about making in the pic below except i'll just attach the 48" light fixture i buy to the inside, the entire inside will be painted white to help reflect light into the tank and outside will be painted flat black to match my stand, i'll likely have 4 small 180deg hinges on the lid with 2 hinges on each end that allows the canopy to stay open for feeding and if i need in the tank.. and im also thinking of putting a couple handles on it for easy removal for one person if ever needed to get inside or even for maintaince...and i thought if i lose or get light coming from under the lid that i could just lay a small thin fuzzy peice of fabric stabled in the edge to stop light from coming out any cracks if there is any

similar light fixture... all though im curious do you think i need the plastic covers to go on these ? i will be keeping the glass sliding lids on the tank on the inside - http://www.tscstores.com/48-T8-FLUORESCENT-SHOPLIGHT-P16686.aspx

anyone have any thoughts concerns ? suggestions, im not working right now so this is going to made as CHEAPLY as possible lol i may not even be able to make this till im working if i cant find extra cash for some a sheet of 4'x8' 3/4" MDF

Sounds like you've got it pretty well figured out. I doubt you'll need the fabric piece in there though.

it was just a thought if i lose or see light coming through, and the back will be all open to allow my filters and heater cords and such to get out the back with no fuss, thought maybe a small 3" peice on the back maybe to help hold a bit more light inside instead of losing a bunch of light out the back... plus with the open back it will allow for moisture/heat/humidity to escape when needed rather then the wood trying to soak everything all up

Anything happen with this?

nope not yet, i ended up thinking of a different wayt o hang a light fixture with some pipe off my cabinet going to see if i like the looks and maintence around it in the tank and etc if not i'll go with making a canopy but otherwise i'll stay with my hanging fixture :)
