That depends on you and how frequent you want to change water but about a month is the norm.
If you are building a small cave what I have done in the past for my reef frag plugs is to toss it into the toilet tank since it gets flushed frequently.
If you are building a small cave, why not buy a coconut, brush all the hair off, drill a 1 inch hole in the side, remove the coconut meat and milk. Then boil it for 15 minutes? The coconut is completely fish safe and natural. Pluss you can also atatch some anubias or moss to the outside and it will blend in much better. No leaching, no toxins, no fuss, a lot less messy than cement!
I have eight coconut caves in various tanks at the moment. The oldest has been in my outdoor tropical tank for the last 8 years and is fine.
