I know this will be a questions thats been answered before, but here it is anyways. I have 2 tanks that I am looking to begin planting, I dont want to spend the money on the CO2 systems, so I would like to do a DIY one. I know it has been done out of pop bottles. Would it be possible to use a larger volume and thus create a reactor that lasts longer. I have a 55 gallon brackish (no puffers) and an 18 gallon that I am thinking about planting. I would use a 3.5 gallon culligan bottle for each tank. Would this work, and also any good plans based on pop bottle that I could modify?

Your going to have too much co2 for those size tanks so you'll have to cut back the flow (also creating back pressure problems), co2 doesn't store well with the mixture, so the formula is going to go rancid before the co2 runs out, forcing other gases into the tank before you realize it.

Stay with several 2ltr soda bottles and rotate/cycle them.

You'll need a bubble counter and a bell or ladder diffuser too.
