i know this topic is been here for along time but i wanted some insight here on weather or not the peice i have should be put in my tank or not.. iv been soaking it for along time and i just boiled it today and the tannins are still comeing out and idk whats making it smell.. but its kinda hurst smelling and im thinking its becasue i had the in a rubber maid container for 2 weeks without a water change. it smells like rotting eggs. and i did another water change and the smell seemed to go away. and im pretty sure its not cedar because i sanded it a little bit before and it didnt smell. but im not sure waht kind of wood it is. its gotta be one of the more harder woods becasue i cant push my finger nail into it that mush even being soaked for so long. so the main question is do i or do inot put it in my tank. also if any one could get my any advise to if ishould soakd it in a sertain solution that would be nice to! thanks

IF theres any doubts i wouldnt.

What?

A picture of it would be a bit helpful too to see what kind of wood it could be. The smell from the water was probably the dirty, stagnant water. When your soaking driftwood prior to adding to your tank, your going to want to change the water every couple of days to help the process. It doesn't take a couple days, but time. Sounds like your on the right track though..

ok sounds good thanks for your input! but it smelt my hole house up but it wa sitting for so long im thinking thats why should i put some salt in the water to kill off more organisms?

i would soak it in a vinegar solution to neutralize anything that may have grown on it or something and then soak really good and let dry thoroughly out in the sun and that should take away anything causing a smell
